Ashley couldn’t keep the grin off her face. Presley looked like she was going to be sick, slightly green, but that seemed to be her default position ever since they’d fallen into the Underneath. For someone who always seemed so fierce and fearless at school, Presley now cowered behind Ashley at nearly every turn. Ashley didn’t understand it. She assumed that her older sister would have been the one to take the lead since her failed experiment with Presley’s jewelry had landed them both into this extra-dimensional space but Ashley had been wrong. At nearly every step of their journey so far, it was Ashley who did the talking, made the decisions, and pulled Presley along with her. It was disorienting and unsettling for Ashley.

A brightly lit hall stretched ahead of them, the ceramic tiles of the floor immaculate, bouquets of flowers suspended at intervals along the painted walls. If they weren’t being marched to some unknown authority figure by large scary phantoms, Ashley would have appreciated the grandeur of the place and Presley would have commented on the loveliness of the flowers and chandeliers, but as it was both girls just hunched their shoulders and kept walking between the hulking figures on either side of them.

When they reached the double doors at the end of the hall, their escorts didn’t hesitate at all but continued walking straight through them. Ashley took the step that would put her foot through the door when Presley pulled up short.

“I can’t do it! I won’t do it.” Presley squeaked.

“What?” Ashley asked confused.

“I will not do the whole walk-through-solid-stuff thing again. It creeps me out.” Presley crossed her arms over her chest and stuck her chin out.

“But Press, in a second those two big guys will be back here and I don’t think they’re going to care if you’re creeped out or not. Besides, there’s nothing to be afraid of…”

“I’m not afraid! I just don’t want to do it.” Presley insisted.

“But we’ve done it before. Four times, now, since we crossed into this dimension. Remember? There was my bedroom door, one, and then our front door, two, and then-”

“I know! I was there. You don’t have to give me a - EEP!” Presley didn’t get to finish her latest complaint as the heads of their escorts were poking out of the upper portion of the doors looking at them.

“C’mon!” Ashley gripped Presley’s elbow and practically dragged her through the door.

After Presley finished a short series of whimpers, she joined her sister in staring wide-eyed at what could only be described as a grand ballroom. And there was a ball in full swing.
