The diminutive queen knew what she had to do. She just hated that there was no alternative. Having tried reason and magic and now force, there was no other option she could see but to put the beast down.
She still held its horn clutched in her hand and given the arcane defensive properties of its hide, she had to admit that the solution seemed rather neat, if so profoundly sad.
As she trudged back toward the pit into which the beast had fallen, an effective strategy by her warriors to contain it while doing battle with it, her general approached.
“My queen, allow me to deliver the blow,” Eldermere murmured, ever aware of both the best strategy in a situation and also how she herself must feel about it.
“Kind of you to offer, old friend, but this duty falls to me,” Samira said.
“Of course, your majesty,” Eldermere bowed his head and with a gesture the warriors in and around the sludge pit backed away.
Samira raised the horn above her head, flexed her wings, and prepared to leap into the pit to deliver the killing blow.
